Infrastructure is currently at the crossroads of fundamental megatrends, what we can refer to as the 4Ds: decarbonization, digitalization, deglobalization and demographics.
These four variables will influence the way society develops and operates in the medium to long run. This is the reason why discussing their implications on the infrastructure sector becomes essential for policymakers, regulators and financial investors.
Two sectors are particularly affected by these megatrends, and European policymakers are increasingly turning their attention to them.
On one hand, in the transportation sector, the progressive cross-border integration of railway networks is opening up new scenarios where rail transport can contribute to reducing carbon emissions. What’s more, a synergistic relationship with air transport is possible, but it must be properly designed.
On the other hand, the energy sector is under the spotlight for its key role in contributing to the Net Zero Emissions target by 2050. Yet the search for greater independence of the European Union from Russian gas supplies has added an element of geopolitics to investments in infrastructure. This gives rise to the need to reconsider clean energy infrastructure along the green supply chain.
This annual event, the second of the new five-year partnership under the Antin IP Associate Professorship in Infrastructure Finance, presents the findings of research on these critical issues. The focus is on the challenges and opportunities that investors and asset managers in infrastructure face in today’s new scenario. At this event, we will also present the results of the third edition of the Observatory on Infrastructure Pricing, which is focused on another major megatrend: how demographic fluctuations affect the returns of infrastructure as an asset class.
