A New Voice for Students’ Economic Research

, by Tomaso Eridani
Nobel Michael Spence will be guest speaker on November 6 at the launch event for the new Bocconi Economic Journal (BEJ) which will publish and promote research written by Bocconi students

A showcase to publish and promote research resulting from student work on campus. This is the intent of the new Bocconi Economic Journal (BEJ), an economics student-led journal, supported by the Department of Economics, which will be presented on November 6.

The journal aims to promote research among undergraduate and graduate students and provide a platform to share valuable pieces of research written by Bocconi students. “I was in exchange at Columbia and saw how such journals there and at other major US universities were widespread. On return I talked about it with some fellow students of my course and we decided to give it a go here in Bocconi. And we are very thankful for the support given by the Department to carry out our project,” says Roberto Fani, MSc student in economics and Editor of BEJ. “We want to give visibility to the work of students, from their thesis to group projects, which are often of high level, even at empirical level.”

BEJ will be presented on November 6, at 6.30pm, in aula Franceschi, at an event with guest speaker Michael Spence, Nobel prize winner and Distinguished Professor at Bocconi.

“We were very pleased that the idea came from the students themselves, and we are happy to support this initiative, especially through a scientific supervision,” explains Tito Boeri, Head of the Department of Economics. “As part of their educational path, it is important to support students who have a research orientation, helping them turn their insights into real research products, and providing a platform where they can put their work on display.”

BEJ, with an editorial board made up of many students will be published annually, by Egea, and will contain papers written by students (for example, graduate or undergraduate thesis or other research projects, in groups or as single authors). Papers that are approved by the Editorial Board will be sent to members of the faculty with an expertise in the field for a final check. Apart from the journal, papers will also be available on a dedicated website, under an open source license, and indexed on scientific search engines, such as Google Scholar. “Indexing and citing will mean the works will be available to contribute to the wider public debate,” says Roberto.

The first call for submission will open in November and the first issue is expected in late Spring or early Autumn 2025.

BEJ adds to the long experience of Bocconi Legal Papers, the official law review of the School of Law of Bocconi University with an editorial staff made up of students from the Law Degree program. Launched in 2008, BLP publishes articles on its website (https://blp.egeaonline.it/it/1/bocconi-legal-papers) and collected in print volumes, 18 so far over the years, published by Egea.
