Mathematics Precourses, this Year also Online
To check their knowledge, round it out or simply to review, an online mathematics course is up and running as of 2 July. It is aimed at the 2018/19 freshmen, accessible through the You @ B Agenda (by clicking on the BBoard widget and then on "Mathematics Course" link). "These lessons are designed", explains Guido Osimo, coordinator of Mathematics courses, "to facilitate the transition from high school to university mathematics courses".
The new initiative complements the program of the University's pre-courses, which will take place during Welcome Days, starting from 29 August. "The original idea was to carry out the whole process in online mode", says Osimo, "but then we decided to split the program into two parts: the one most linked to the review of the high school program will be done online, while the newer material, more connected to the university program, will be done in person ". Like traditional lessons, the online part is also available in both Italian and English. "The new mathematics course is an excellent example of blended learning", adds Annalisa Prencipe, Dean of Bocconi Undergraduate School, "an educational approach that combines classroom learning with distance learning using digital tools, in line with the latest trends in the world of education".
"The online course begins with a self-assessment test, according to which the student can choose which parts of the pre-course to focus on", continues Guido Osimo. "There are a total of 8 modules available in 22 lessons, consisting of video explanations, exercises and written material, for a total of 10-12 hours for students who decide to follow the whole program. It is a varied and stimulating path, conceived together with the BUILT - Bocconi University Innovations in Learning and Teaching. "The online courses became available on July 2, and the first day there were about 400 accesses. "An encouraging number," Osimo says," but in reality no moment is better than another to take the course. There are those who are already working on it, others will do it on their holidays, and some will decide at the last moment. My strong advice, however, is to do it, because it deals with topics which the first year courses will not review ".
