AI, a possible ally for life sciences
, by Andrea Celauro
From the study of diseases, to management of patients and the prediction of outcomes of operations and therapies: Artificial Intelligence is forcefully entering all aspects of medicine, but whether it will be truly useful will also depend on how fair and privacyfriendly it can be
From genomics to imaging, from biomedical analysis to the ability to predict a patient's response to a particular treatment, Artificial Intelligence can turbocharge research and help doctors in the fight against cancer and other diseases, as the four editorials in this focus, by Francesca Buffa, Oriana Ciani, Lucia Ferrara and Anna Gatti point out. However, for AI and machine learning to be true allies, we need to train a new generation of multidisciplinary research teams that can reap the benefits and to resolve some outstanding issues on fairness and privacy protection.
