Three pieces of advice for firstyear students of the Graduate School

, by Barbara Orlando
Carlo Salvato, school Director: cooperate, dedicate time to voluntary work, prepare for the world of work

LEARN TO COOPERATE, NOT COMPETE
The companies of today and employers of the future know that the best results are achieved when people collaborate, pooling knowledge and skills – not when they compete. The logic "I win, you lose" does not work here and proves inefficient. Learn to collaborate and cooperate in class and work groups, sharing ideas and resources. Help each other, and you will develop valuable leadership skills. If anything the "competitors" are outside the walls of Bocconi, not in your classroom.

BUILD YOUR SOCIAL SKILLS THROUGH VOLUNTEERING AND OTHER ACTIVITIES
Do not focus just on your studies and academic education. The world needs graduates who are able to leave the world a better place than they found it. This requires sensibility and social skills that are developed not only with study, but also with volunteering and other social responsibility activities that Bocconi encourages. This is how you will truly succeed, from every point of view.

PREPARE FOR THE WORKFORCE
Bocconi University is a bridge between your studies and the real world. After just the first days, you will have taken the first steps to transform your identity from "students" to "professionals". So do not consider yourself as just a "learner", but also as a person capable of offering their personal perspectives on a topic along with concrete solutions thanks to your innovative ideas and teamwork.
