From student to student: how to approach the undergraduate degree

, by Barbara Orlando
Advice from Raphael Jacob, secondyear Economic and Social Sciences student

GET USED TO YOUR NEW ENVIRONMENT
Moving into a new city/country can be overwhelming, with heavy social and academic pressure. Although campus life has a lot to offer with associations, events, etc, take your time. It is worth pushing yourself to discover, but don't drain yourself: opportunities will come one after the other. Make sure you find a balance between embracing your new environment and settling in comfortably.

UNDERSTAND HOW TO MAKE YOUR WORK PRODUCTIVE
University academics demand a higher level of responsibility and self-discipline. Productivity is a very useful skill in your first year of university. However, there is no such thing as a perfect work routine. Each student has their own method to get work done, try to find the one that best suits you: try working in different study places, with different people, at different times... you will save a lot of time and unnecessary stress.

MAKE UP SOME FREE TIME FOR YOURSELF
Academics may be challenging and time-consuming, thus having some time for yourself is fundamental. Once you'll have your study plan in mind, you'll realize some periods are less academically demanding, use this time wisely. From time to time, it is important to take some distance and campus life, to exit the "bubble". Milan's vibrant culture and convenient location offer many chances for weekend getaways. These breaks are essential and exalt your university experience.
