The Bocconi economist is the first recipient from an Italian university of the John von Neumann Award

The Rajk College for Advanced Studies in Budapest has honored Professor Guido Tabellini of Bocconi’s Department of Economics with the 2024 John von Neumann Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the field of economics. This award celebrates individuals who have significantly influenced academic research and public policy, and in contrast with other scientific awards it is given by students of economics and various social sciences, after a long deliberation process.

The Neumann Award, named after the renowned Hungarian-born mathematician John von Neumann, acknowledges scholars whose research has profoundly impacted both theoretical and practical aspects of economics. It is the first time that this honor goes to an academic affiliated with an Italian university. The motivation states that Guido Tabellini’s studies “have set an exemplary standard for academic excellence,” and “have not only expanded our understanding of the economic and political world but have also left an enduring impact on the academic community.”

Professor Tabellini has declared “I am happy that the importance of research in the field of political economics is being recognized, a field of research whose relevance is becoming increasingly important and evident, and which attracts the interest of so many bright young people.”
