The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, has appointed Francesco Viganò, Full Professor of Criminal Law at Bocconi, as Judge on the Constitutional Court. Viganò replaces Paolo Grossi, current President of the Court, who has finished his term of office.

Born in 1966, Viganò is a scholar of human rights at national and international level. "Criminal law fascinates me for the dramatic nature of the subject", he said in an interview with Bocconi Knowledge upon his arrival at Bocconi, "and its impact on people's lives. "Criminal Law always has to do with the weak: I am talking about the victims of a crime, of course, but also about those affected by the State's punitive power. The very idea that Law is a means to regulate the exercise of this power is a great intellectual and moral challenge that appeals to our conscience".

"The appointment of Prof. Viganò by President Mattarella is an honor for Bocconi University", said the President of the University, Mario Monti, "especially for those who have worked for an ever greater development of legal studies here. In this new high position, Prof. Viganò will be able to put at the service of the Country his authority in terms of fundamental rights and in the use of law as an instrument to pursue the ideal of justice. On behalf of the whole Bocconi community, I warmly applaud him for his prestigious appointment and I wish him all the best for his work".

"Human capital is at the heart of Bocconi's development in these years", said the Rector, Gianmario Verona", and acknowledgments such as that received by Professor Viganò are proof of the value of the investment we are making. Two years ago, Professor Viganò chose Bocconi for its international standing, aware that he would find the ideal environment to continue his commitment as a researcher and as a teacher".

A graduate of the University of Milan, Viganò also studied at the University of Munich, at the Max-Planck-Institut in Freiburg and at the All Souls College in Oxford. He obtained his doctorate in Pavia and, before arriving at Bocconi in 2016, he taught in Brescia and at the University of Milan.
