Elia Bruè Honored with the Frontiers of Science Award 2025

, by Andrea Costa
The study represents an important step forward in the branch of mathematics called topology, which studies the properties of mathematical figures and objects

The prestigious Frontiers of Science Award 2025, given by the International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS), was awarded to the paper “Fundamental groups and the Milnor Conjecture”, written by Elia Bruè (Bocconi Department of Decision Sciences), Aaron Naber (Institute of Advanced Studies, Princeton University) and Daniele Semola (Swiss Federal Polytechnic, Zurich). The paper innovatively explores fundamental groups and Milnor's Conjecture, offering new perspectives on one of the most fascinating topics in contemporary mathematics (we covered it here). The recognition by ICBS highlights the importance of the contribution made to the understanding of fundamental mathematical structures, opening new avenues for future research.

The Frontiers of Science Award (FSA) was established in 2023 to honor breakthrough discoveries in the fields of Mathematics, Physics and Theoretical Information Science. Supported by the City of Beijing and the Yanqi Lake Beijing Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Application (BIMSA), the FSA is now one of the most internationally coveted awards.

Each year, a global panel of experts selects the winners by evaluating the originality and impact of the submitted papers. Bruè, Naber and Semola will be invited to collect the award during the official ceremony in July 2025 in Beijing, where they will have the opportunity to present their results in front of an audience of world-renowned scientists.
