Bocconi Welcomes “The World’s Most Famous Justice”

, by Davide Ripamonti, translated by Rosa Palmieri
An event will be held on 16 October featuring Albie Sachs – leading figure against apartheid in South Africa and later a Constitutional Court Justice

Albie Sachs is “a man who made history”, says Marta Cartabia, Full Professor of Constitutional Law at Bocconi University. On 16 October she will welcome Sachs at the talk titled “From Activism to Constitutional Engagement”, scheduled for 8:30am in the Franceschi Aula at Bocconi University on Via Sarfatti 25. Rector Francesco Billari and the Dean of the School of Law, Pietro Sirena, will be present as well. Albie Sachs started his career as a lawyer at a firm founded by Nelson Mandela, and was a staunch activist against apartheid at a time where it meant risking one’s life during those dark years for South Africa. In 1988 Sachs was victim of a vicious attack that left him severely wounded. Several years later, once Mandela was freed from prison and elected president, he appointed Sachs to serve on the Constitutional Court, helping draft South Africa’s new constitution. In the following years, Sachs was named “the world’s most famous justice” by British newspaper The Guardian. “Meeting Justice Albie Sachs in person,” exclaims Marta Cartabia, “is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for Bocconi students: a civic and professional testament, an example of a life dedicated to the values of justice, inclusion and peace.”
