Rewarding Luca and Margarida's Merit and Hard Work

Their studies at Bocconi, in Cyber Risk and Finance respectively, are supported by donors to the University

Luca Cristantielli, in his first year of Cyber Risk Strategy and Governance and Margarida Veloso, in her second year of Finance, both have a passion for academics and a determination that led them to become scholarship recipients. "It's a great feeling to see my efforts recognized, to realize that my studies have tangible value," says Margarida, a 22-year-old student from Lisbon.

Bocconi has always invested in deserving young people: in 2019, the University allocated €30 million in scholarships and exemptions and today about one in four students receives financial aid. The University's commitment is shared by more than 1,300 donors (including alumni, individuals, companies and foundations). Over the past year, they have supported more than 120 students with their donations through the Within Our Reach fundraising campaign.

"We often hear that merit doesn't really matter these days," says Luca, "But my personal experience has shown the opposite: merit has played a fundamental role in my life, and combined with hard work and determination, it is offering me a world of opportunity." After a Bachelor in Business Administration and Management – covered by a scholarship – Luca was one of the first recipients of the full scholarships established through the Cyber Risk Partnership, created for the Master of Science in Cyber Risk Strategy and Governance. "I've always been attracted to high tech and cyber security," he explains.

"Having the opportunity to study does not just mean acquiring skills," says Margarida. "Attending university is about personal growth, creating friendships, but also connections that could turn into professional opportunities in the future." Margarida is one of the first recipients of the "Bocconi Women in Finance" scholarships (now "Bocconi Women Awards"). Awarded based on merit, the scholarship provides a 50% exemption from tuition and fees.

Luca dreams of working in the field of data protection and privacy, while Margarida aspires to a career in investment banking or consulting. For both of them, academics represent an investment for the future: "I chose Bocconi's MSc in Finance because it is well-placed in international rankings," she says. "And I always liked the idea of living in Milan: a mix of culture and innovation with a very dynamic lifestyle." Milan had an important impact for Luca as well: "Coming from a small town, it all seemed so big, even the areas on campus."
Luca and Margarida's stories are just two that the University has written together with its donors. To find out more, read the Donor Report.
