From Munich to Milan. An Expert of Organizational Learning at Bocconi

, by Benedetta Ciotto
Thorsten Grohsjean was Assistant Professor at LMU Munich for 4 years. And since September 2016 he's been teaching at the Department of Management and Technology at Bocconi

Employee mobility, organizational learning and innovation are the research interests of Thorsten Grohsjean, who holds an Assistant Professor position at the Department of Management and Technology since September 2016. "At the micro-level, I study how individuals develop their human and social capital across organizations and how the circumstances of the development influence individual behavior and performance", explains the German Professor, who taught at the Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) Munich and was a research associate at Imperial College London. "I knew that I would love to be a teacher since primary school and when I finished high school my dream was to be a professor. Already back then I loved the idea that you can reflect on the world and continuously develop and disseminate new ideas. And doing it as a job is amazing".

The academic career of Grohsjean began with a Diploma (equivalent to M.Sc.) in Management from the University of Mannheim and continued with a Master of Business Research and a Ph.D. in Management from LMU Munich. "I was also a visiting researcher at the University of Maryland, guest lecturer at the Hong Kong University and I am currently a research associate at the Ifo Institute in Munich and a guest lecturer at the Singapore Institute of Management", says the German professor, who, when not studying or teaching, practices powerlifting, listens to alternative music and reads French literature.

His research has been published - or is forthcoming- in the Academy of Management Journal, the International Journal of Industrial Organization, the Journal of World Business and the Academy of Management Best Paper Proceedings. "Bocconi is a stimulating and international place. This experience will surely be positive for my career as I will have the opportunity to get constructive feedback on work by my colleagues who share my same passion for research".
