Donato Masciandaro Becomes Adviser to the Minister of Economy

, by Andrea Costa
The Bocconi economist will work on monetary policy and financial sector supervision

Donato Masciandaro, of Bocconi's Department of Economics, has been appointed Adviser to Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti on monetary policy, regulatory policy and banking and financial supervision, including anti-money laundering and anti-usury.

"I accepted this position, which matches the subjects to which I have dedicated my research for many years, on the condition that it allows me to continue my work at Bocconi," Masciandaro said, "not least because I fully share the minister's view regarding fiscal policy: public accounts must be in order, in harmony with the European framework, which is still in the making."

"There is a lot of work to be done in order to learn more about illegal financial markets, which cause harm to the legitimate economy. In addition, I want to take steps toward greater transparency of supervisory bodies, of course safeguarding their independence, and also to reduce our country's huge lag in terms of financial education. These are issues that enjoy cross-party consensus."
