Bocconi: Francesco Billari Reappointed Rector Until 2027

, by Barbara Orlando
The goals for the Rector’s second term will include drafting the 2026-2030 Strategic Plan, fostering development in cognitive and behavioral science, driving the digital transformation and use of artificial intelligence and supporting third mission and social impact initiatives

The University Board unanimously confirmed Francesco Billari as Rector of Bocconi University today, on the proposal of President Andrea Sironi. Following the amendment to the Statute in February, the second term will last three years, until 31 October 2027.

While continuously strengthening Bocconi as a leading European university in the social sciences, over the next three years Professor Billari and his team will, in particular, be committed to:

  • Coordinating the University's Strategic Plan for the 2026-2030 five-year period, inserting it into a long-term vision of higher education and research with a focus on global demographic and socio-economic trends
  • Creating a Department in the field of cognitive and behavioral science, which will allow the University to round out its presence in frontier social sciences, with new alliances and education programs; as well as supporting the digital transformation and the use of artificial intelligence in teaching and research by further developing a computational science and data-based approach, also thanks to collaborations and connections with other universities and companies
  • Promoting social impact and third mission initiatives in Italy, Europe and around the world, including by further encouraging, enhancing and recognizing student participation in the various initiatives. A cultural presence in Milan and being open to the city must be further consolidated, including in the context of the main events that mark the life of the local community
  • Launching a fundraising campaign with a projection toward 2030, based on the pillars of inclusion and support of students, research, Faculty and the campus, involving individual, corporate and foundation donors around the world. This will be done while also leveraging the Alumni Community, including through major initiatives that encourage a return to the campus
  • Continuing to attract quality students from Italy, Europe and around the world, further strengthening inclusion policies and expanding opportunities to live in residence halls near campus

"During his first term, Rector Billari propelled Bocconi forward in its role as a social elevator and an institution that concretely promotes inclusion and cultural and gender diversity," said President Sironi. "The future of Bocconi will continue to be characterized by these guidelines, in addition to international openness and developing impactful research and a quality teaching experience aimed at training ‘future-proof’ students."

"Together with all the members of the university," said Rector Billari, "we will work to draft a new Strategic Plan that will allow Bocconi to consolidate its ambition for global impact with a strong local presence. Our research must make a difference in the economy and society, policies and institutions, changing people's lives and helping change the world."
