The Art of Mentoring

, by Tomaso Eridani
The importance of mentorships in today's business world and the secret of a positive mentor/mentee relationship are discussed in the new Story Scanner podcast

Those who have had the good fortune to have a mentor often remember the figure in an almost mythological way. In fact, it is to Greek mythology that we must go to find the origins of Mentor, to whom in the 'Odyssey', Ulysses entrusts his son Telemachus on departing for the Trojan War. Mentor's name has thus been used to describe an experienced person who imparts their knowledge, counsel and wisdom to a less experienced person.
Back in the real world, the role of the mentor has been established for centuries in such fields as the arts and craftsmanship. But only more recently have business people and scholars recognized the vital role mentors can play in the business world. In this episode of Story Scanner podcast, Vincenzo Perrone, professor of Leadership and Organizational Behaviour at Bocconi, talks about the importance of this role and gives insight into the ideal characteristics of a good mentor and the essence of a positive mentor-mentee relationship.
Bocconi has launched the new 'CEO Connect - Your Executive Mentor' program with 30 MSc students each teamed up with a top CEO who will help them become more aware of their professional aspirations and guide their mentees on the path to achieving their goals. In the podcast, two participating CEOs, Luca Colombo, Country Director at Facebook Italy, and Bernadette Bevacqua, President and CEO of Henkel Italia, talk about their experience as mentees, what student or young professional should look for in a mentor and other advice for starting a career path.
