From the Army to Amazon via an MBA

, by Andrea Celauro, translated by Richard Greenslade
The next to last episode of Svolta tells the story of an Army captain and his choice to look beyond that world

After a military career in the Army, including two tours of duty in Afghanistan, at some point came the desire to change his life. Svolte tells the story of Captain Alfredo Perna, now a site leader with Amazon. "My grandfather and my father were military. Growing up in such a family, it comes naturally, the calling comes by itself." At the age of thirty he made the choice to look for something new. "I thought about what the turning point could be. At the beginning I thought of an opportunity in the United Nations, where the job postings always included the requirement of an MBA." And so he decided to throw himself into the MBA program at SDA Bocconi, where, moreover, as marketing professor Gabriele Troilo points out, "We have always had a certain number of participants in our courses who come from the Armed Forces." When we think of the military, "We often think of it as a very internally oriented world," continues Troilo, "while those who, like me, deal with marketing, have the goal of being oriented to the outside, towards customers. For those who come from that background, it is a real mental leap."
