DIBATTITI DI GEOPOLITICA - The EU in the Chips War

Semiconductors and microchips are at the core of the competition for technological supremacy, which is essential for geopolitical relevance. They are also the focus of major industrial policies in all the leading economies.

Both the US and the EU have approved their respective Chips Acts to support semiconductor supply chains in response to the increasing threat China poses to the global semiconductor hub in Taiwan.

Furthermore, the geopolitical confrontation between the US and China has significant industrial consequences for European microchip companies, particularly the Dutch firm ASML.

In a new “Geopolitical Debate,” we will discuss how the EU can navigate the “Chips Wars” that are shaping international relations and the global economy.

SPEAKERS

Alessia Amighini is a non-resident fellow at Bruegel and Co-Head of Asia Centre and Senior Associate Research Fellow at ISPI. She is also an Associate Professor of Economics at the Department of Economic and Business Studies (DiSEI) at the University of Piemonte Orientale (Novara, Italy), and an Adjunct Professor of International Economics at the Catholic University (Milan, Italy). She is the author of Money and Might along the Belt and Road Initiative (Bocconi University Press).

Cesare Alemanni is a freelance journalist and the author of the recent book Il re invisible - Storia, economic e sconfinato potere dei microchip (Luiss University Press) 

Roberto Baldoni, is a computer scientist and the former Director General of the National Cybersecurity Agency of Italy

Sanne van der Lugt is a researcher and policy advisor on China in Africa, Chinese technological developments and the consequences for European strategic autonomy. She is an expert of the microchip industry, with a special focus on the Dutch company ASML.
